The following Farms in Upper Merion were recorded in A. H. Mueller's "Property Atlas-Pennsylvania Railroad" in 1912.
It is now easy to see how many of our roads and sections of the community
got their names.
Buttonwood was originally called "Swamp Vrass", owned by the Roberts
family, and home to Jonathan Roberts (U.S. Senator, 1815-21). It steadily decreased
in acreage and Jusdon Kerr was the last to own it as a farm in 1912. In 1915,
the site was sold to Valley Forge Memorial Gardens where the beautifully restored
Roberts home stands today.
The Gulph Farm was originally part of the Hughes family tract of 1697. The
Gulph Farm of approx. 168 acres has been owned by the Gulph Mills Golf
Club since 1916.
The David Farm, occupied by King Manor, was originally part of the Holstein
family tract dating to about 1712. William David purchased the land around
the turn of the century. In 1922 there were no homes in King Manor. In 1923
the Tank Corps, the 28th Division of the National Guard, moved onto the David
Farm. Soon after this, David Farm became known as King Manor because of the
fairs held there. Rumor has it that games were played at these fairs, enabling
someone to become the "King of the Manor".
Red Hilll Farm is occupied by the Valley Forge Shopping Center and Winter Camp Farm (named because Gen. John Peter Muhlenberg's winter headquarters were there) became the Upper Merion Community Center on Moore Road. Valley Brook Farm became the housing development along Keebler Road.
